Eustis is a city in Lake County, Florida, located within the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Area. Eustis is home to GeorgeFest, the second longest ongoing annual celebration in the United States. The area of modern-day Eustis went through a couple of name changes before the people finally came up with the name “Lake Eustis,” after General Abraham Eustis. General Eustis was a well-known figure during and after the Seminole Wars, having had a few small battles with the Seminole near present-day Tavares, on the southern shore. During the pre-railroad era, steamboats used Eustis as a port, causing the small town to become quite busy. In 1883, it was decided to change “Lake Eustis” to just “Eustis.” Then in the 1850s, the United States government opened the town up for homesteading, but the settlement was hindered by the start of the Civil War. In 1875, surveyors were finally able to complete their jobs and a flood of settlers and homesteaders descended on Eustis.
