Minneola is a Native American word meaning “much water.” The name is something community leaders are proud of because it is one of the few towns with a lake that retains the original name given by Native Americans long ago. Captain William G. Smith was one of the first settlers in the area after the Civil War ended. After Smith settled in the area of modern-day Minneola, word of the area’s beauty got around and groups of settlers began moving to the area and opening homesteads. In 1881, a man named Henry Wilson moved here and planted a large and flourishing citrus grove. In 1884, George W. Hull, one of the town’s most influential people in those days, obtained a survey and mapped out the boundaries of the town. Hull is the one who named the town after the lake. At the beginning of the 20th century, the small town began to have an influx of people building homes in the area, as it had become a well-known winter retreat for people from all over the country and the world. In 1926, Minneola was incorporated.
