In 1885, a man by the name of J. W. Payne, a native of Baltimore, established a settlement in the area of modern-day Mascotte. Payne named his settlement Mascotte after a ship called “The S.S. Mascotte." The word “mascotte” comes from the French word “mascot,” meaning an animal or thing that brings good luck. This small ship was known for hauling tobacco from Havana, Cuba to Tampa, Florida, During the Spanish-American War.
