Clermont was named after a town in France that was the birthplace of A.F. Wrotniski, one of the city’s co-founders. The historic area of the town was platted and built on the hills that lie between Lake Minnehaha and Lake Minneola. In 1916, Clermont was incorporated as a town. In 1922, a land developer by the name of Edward Denslow formed The Postal Colony Company, which purchased 1,000 acres of land on what is now present-day Clermont and planted citrus groves. The citrus groves were owned and maintained by a group of retired United States postal workers who were successful in turning Clermont into one of the nation’s leading citrus growing towns. In 1956, the Florida Citrus Tower was built, becoming the tallest human-made structure in the state of Florida.
