Greater Pines is a subdivision of Clermont in Lake County, Florida. Greater Pines features single-family residences designed and constructed by Greater Homes starting in the early 1990s, with newer homes built as late as 2005, and offering homebuyers several kinds of flexible floor plans. Two main highways serving the Clermont area are US-27 (north-south) and State Road 50 (east-west). State Road 50 East connects Greater Pines to Orlando via the Florida Turnpike and the Spessard L. Holland East-West Expressway. Clermont was founded in 1884, built among the rolling hills between Lake Minnehaha and Lake Minneola. The town was incorporated in 1916 and named after Clermont-Ferrand, France, one of the countries oldest cities, which was the birthplace of A. F. Wrotnoski, one of the co-founders of Clermont, Florida. In 1922, The Postal Colony Company was formed by Edward Denslow, who purchased 1,000 acres of land in Clermont. Denslow planted citrus groves on the land and passed ownership over to various retired postal workers who tended to them. Over time, Clermont became one of the largest citrus producing towns in the United States. In 1956, the Florida Citrus Tower was built, becoming one of Central Florida’s most visited landmarks.
